Palliative care: “Every human being should be entitled to relief from pain”

“Every human being should be entitled to relief from pain”

That line is part of a speech given by Outgoing President Troels S. Jensen of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) when he spoke at the 12th World Congress on Pain in Glasgow, Scotland at the beginning of the week. He called for palliative pain relief to be made a human right.

This isn’t a new issue - it’s one that the palliative care movement has been fighting for and working on for a long time now: AIDS, Cancer, and Palliative Care in Africa and 7% of World Population Suffering Unnecessary Cancer Pain.

It seems like such a simple thing: “Every human being should be entitled to relief from pain,” and yet so many people around the world are suffering needlessly.  You can read more about Dr. Jensen’s speech: World’s Biggest Event On Pain Calls For Palliative Care To Be Made A Human Right.

What can we do to help raise this awareness? Is there something we can do? Or are we powerless?

Totally unrelated to pain - need advice re….

a piano!

My parents gave me their piano, which has been in their house for about 40 years. I like the piano and want it, but now that it’s in the house, all I can smell is pipe and cigar smoke. Either it’s really strong or I’m really sensitive - but either way, I have to find a way to neutralize the odor somewhat.

Any suggestions? It’s solid wood, a light brown that’s darkened to a dark honey. I have no clue what type of wood it is though.

10 Ways You Can Take a More Active Role as a Hospital Patient

I found this press release and it has some great pointers:

10 Ways You Can Take a More Active Role as a Hospital Patient

TACOMA, Wash., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ — In our changing world of medicine, patients are encouraged to learn about their diagnosis, ask questions and take an active role in their healthcare. Our doctors at Sound Inpatient Physicians (Sound), who have over 100,000 patient encounters a year, embrace their role as educators. As experts in the field of hospital medicine, our hospitalists (hospital-based physicians) have created a list of 10 ways to improve your inpatient experience and contribute to your rapid recovery and timely discharge.

1. Learn about your illness. A lack of knowledge can increase anxiety and lead to feelings of helplessness. Ask your physician to write down your diagnosis and list your medications (if necessary) and provide you with an educational brochure, or recommend a website. Don’t hesitate to take notes.
Some people even keep a health journal with dated entries.

Doctor-Opening-First_NC

For those of you who like to use or who want to try homeopathic remedies for those itches, aches and pains that come along with summer time fun, here is a press release that outlines what types of products may be able to help you:

NORTH BERGEN, N.J. — Summer vacations are in full swing and travelers are packing up the first aid kit in their suitcase. The big question is what should they bring to help with all scrapes, bug bites and irritated skin? The Vitamin Shoppe’s Homeopathic Expert, Carrie Plumley, has some suggestions for travelers this summer.

“Homeopathic products are great for everyone; parents giving them to their children, mature adults, and weekend warriors looking for natural solutions.” said Plumley. “The FDA regulates these products and requires that Homeopathic drugs meet specific standards for strength, quality and purity.”

Another Lyme disease story

I found another Lyme disease story and it is so frustrating to read how someone can lose a year of life because of misdiagnosis. It’s a matter of doctors not being aware of the possibility of Lyme disease and the fact that this may be what is causing their patients’ problems. There still needs to be so much work done in Lyme disease awareness.

The article, Lyme disease takes toll: Year lost without diagnosis, discusses the life of a teenager before diagnosis.

Here at Help My Hurt, we’ve discussed Lyme disease as well:
